The castle was always full of people, more now that they were celebrating Jack’s b-day party, and Elphaba find herself hiding on the library. She never liked parties, and she wanted to celebrate it with Jack in private but Nancy had other plans. That woman was like a force of nature, and no one should be able to pout like that. Nancy remembers her Glinda sometimes.

Jack seemed really happy with the party, and Elphaba knew that he was going to enjoy it, that’s why she didn’t complained much when Nancy made the proposal. Not even when the queen insisted that she should try to use another other kind of dress. The new one was still black, but it didn’t covered his neck, and she was wearing the necklace that jack gave her for birthday. The necklace that Corinthian gave him was around her wrist, at least the dress covered her arms.

Elsewhere in the palace, there was another that held a similar dislike of the sheer number of people swarming the grounds. The nightmare careful weaved his way through the crowd, attempting to get by quickly and, with any luck, completely unnoticed. Certain people didn't need to know he was actually here, after all.

That lady--Nancy? That was her name, right?--said she would meet him in the library. He was fast forming a severe irritation for such places, but regardless, he found himself tracking the room down and slipping inside without a word. It was better than hanging around people he didn't know (and who probably wanted his head), at any rate.

And it was quiet.

Elphaba was too busy with an history book to pay attention to the newcomer. She was sitting next to the window, book on her lap, her long black hair unbraided for once, falling over her shoulder.

Unfortunately, with a cursory look around the room, the Corinthian did notice her.

"Goddammit," he hissed quietly, immediately turning to go back the other way. Of all the people....

It was a really unusual thing to hear in andalasia. People sang, people talked, but no one of them ever cursed. Not that she know. Elphaba looked up from her book into the sound's direction. Goddammit indeed.

"What are you doing here?" She said, closing the book and standing up.

Would answering be breaking that whole "Don't talk to me anymore" request?

"Leaving." It was a short, curt reply, and he didn't even turn to look at her as he continued to the door.

"Good." She turned her back at him too, leaving the book on the table next to the window and crossing her arms.

Elphaba saw two blue birds flying away, giggling and murmuring something about Nancy and the library's door. She frowed.

He wanted to say something to that last comment, but was thankfully able to refrain. He tried to ignore the birds--if there was one thing he despised, it was those damn rats with wings--but....wait. He paused, one hand on a door handle. What about Nancy?

"I'm going to kill her." Elphaba hissed, looking over her shoulder to the door's direction, frowning at it like it was it's fault. "I'm sure it's locked. Magically." She frowned more, she had left the Grimmerie on the north pole.

Locked. Fuckdammit. "Fan-fucking-tastic," he muttered, kicking bitterly at the door. Oh, he was going to hurt that woman the next time he saw her.

Elphaba didn't wasted her time with a reply, she just snorted and turned his face to the window. Nancy was so dead. Not even Glinda ever did something like that to her.

The witch crossed her arms over her chest, the sleeve of the right fell and the necklace glinted on the light.

She didn't noticed.

The Corinthian was more than a little relieved at her silence; he had more than enough pointless arguments lately. He didn't even waste time browsing the books, merely grabbing the first one he passed as he made his way to another seat at the far side of the room. He only glanced up again once he had settled down and cracked the book open, though the necklace immediately caught his eye.

"You kept it." His voice was quite, and perhaps even a little surprised. But it was quickly covered with a small grunt, and when he continued it was louder and disinterested. "You haven't burned that stupid thing yet?"

"Why should I?" She replied, cold. What was with the whole 'let's not talk to each other' thing now? "It's mine, I can do whatever I want with him." Even if she wasn't sure why she keep it. Probably because made her remember how stupid she was. Maybe because the memory wasn't that bad in some way.

Is that what he was reading? He shrugged, not looking up at her. "Magic in general is somewhat interesting. We don't have it in my realm." It was a surprisingly truthful excuse, though he did wish he had grabbed something else instead.

"So what did blue say about you keeping a trinket from me?"

"Sure." For the first time, she smiled slightly, amused by the reply. "The Dream looked quite magic to me though."

She didn't think that Jack noticed. Elphaba tried to be sure that Jack didn't noticed, like she never let nobody know about the green bottle that was from her mother.

"The same he said about me keeping the shoes that princess Zelda gave me. My presents, my problem."

"Dreams aren't magic," he pointed out, finally glancing up with a raised brow. "They're just dreams."

He continued to read in silence for a few more minutes, only for boredom to set in rather quickly. After closing the book he looked up at Elphaba with a flat expression. "The only difference is that he likes Zelda. I find it hard to believe he'd let the necklace go."

He wasn't looking when Elphaba rolled her eyes. Dreams and magic where practically the same.

"I still have it, don't I?" She couldn't understand why was that fact so important for him. "But if it annoys you that much, you can take it off and burn it." She moved her wrist in front of him, the necklace in contract with her green skin.

"Me either." She moved her hand away. "Looks like we should wait." Elphaba moved the sleeve up again to cover it. Why was the Corinthian so interested in if she kept the necklace or not. It not like it was anything important, right?

I'm going to kill Nancy." She murmured, barely audible.

So pretty~

The nightmare only grunted softly in response, silently agreeing with that last comment. Although his agreement was likely something to be a little wary of. He barely knew the queen; he didn't care for her well being.

The book was set aside, and he sent another irritated look at the door. He needed out, and soon.
From: [identity profile] green-witch-w.livejournal.com
The green woman followed his glare. "My magic is not goign to work. You can just hit the door? I always thought that brutal actions were you style."

With another sigh, Elphaba focused her attention on the door, moving her fingers over the wood. after soem minutes the woman stood frozen, her eyes wide. She had not anticipated this.

"The door will not open until we do that first." Damn fairy land world and it's tricks, she thought. The door was a mirage of them. two person, two closed rails.

That last comment earned a brief, slightly startled pause from the nightmare, but it was just as quickly shrugged off and he continued to a shelf without once looking back at her.

She did not answer, she stared back on where Corithian's eyes should be if he had them, her clenched hands shook with rage. Elphaba couldn’t stand it any longer.

Elphaba tried to swallow past the lump in her throat. It felt like her heart had become lodged there. She had failed her promise to protect Jack when the time come. She had failed her life. What hurt the most was that she had failed her lover when he needed her. He lost his memory again and he couldn't do anything, but this man, this nightmare, did it instead of her.

"I want to know why you, from all the people, helped him." She sounded more pleading than anything.

For several long moments he didn't answer. He only continued to stare, to hold her gaze with his own unnatural one. She didn't fight back. He had expected her to retaliate. With what, he wasn't entirely sure, but that question was certainly not what he had anticipated.

"....I don't know." It wasn't a complete lie. He let her go, and backed off, turning to leave the aisle again. "But it wasn't for him, and it wasn't for you, and he owes me a pretty damn big favor now."

"I know it wasn't for me..." She replied in a soft voice after the long moments of silence that followed Corinthians's confession. Why had she confronted him? She should have continued ignoring him. They both would have given up eventually. "No one ever did anything for me."

She covered her face with emerald hands. She shouldn’t have said that. He would make the wrong assumption about her. Corinthian always made her realize her loneliness because he was alone as well. That was the only logical explanation for letting him get mixed in her life so often.

He glanced over his shoulder at the comment, and almost looked like he wanted to say something. To correct her; no one ever did anything for her? Bull. Why do you think Jack attacked him like he did? What about when this world was frozen? What about the necklace....?

But he hesitated. And he didn't. Instead, the Corinthian just sighed, running a hand awkwardly through his hair as he leaned against a shelf.

"Stop moping, woman." It wasn't harsh, or even angry, but it was clearly meant as an order. "None of this is your fault. It never was. You need to remember that."

No, the fault is hers, and it always will be. She knows that much, and most days she can even accept it. Guilt was always with her. When she was a child she tried to scrub the green away, as if it were only skin deep, as if she could slough it off as a snake sheds its skin.Nanny found her near hysterical, sobbing, gathering great handfuls of sand and scouring away, both arms rubbed raw and bleeding. She hadn't realized, then, that she was green through and through, down to the bone, to the soul, that she would never be able to peel back enough layers to be rid of it.

But she knows it now. She is what she is. Jack, beloved man that he is, is still an elf. It isn't his fault. Trouble was his nature too. It does not make her want him less, love him less. It does not lower her opinion of him. It is not a fault of his but hers for give him and excuse to mess with the nightmare.

She moved to the nearest chair, feeling tired.

"I will." She lied.

That deep beneath the armor and denial she has built up around herself, she desperately, desperately wants someone to understand.
